Why I Hate the BCS

8 weeks into the season and their are 7 undefeated teams. 1. Florida 2. Texas 3. Alabama 4. Iowa 5. Cincinatti 6. TCU 7. BSU. I don't know how much you guys have been following this season, but I have a lot. Iowa is definitely not a contender. So far they have found a way to win, but I watched their game against a mediocre Indiana team and they struggled big time until a huge surge in the 4th quarter. But I wasn't very impressed. Florida dominated Georgia, who was a dang good team. Texas dominated OK St (although we should mention their #1 receiver has been suspended for the season, but a team is not defined by one player.) Alabama still definitely looks good, but must get through Florida in the SEC championship once again to make it to the national championship. TCU, Cincinatti, and BSU are all very good. And after watching Oregon, they are absolutely the best 1 loss team in college football. So who deserves to play for the national championship? I know we still got a few more weeks. Iowa will probably lose to Ohio State. Cincinatti still has to win out. But BSU will more than likely run the table, TCU has to get by Utah (they can, Utah isn't great this year.) But what if this happens; Oregon wins out, winning the Pac-10; BSU wins out, going undefeated plus beating Oregon; TCU wins out having beaten Utah, BYU, Virginia, Clemson, and everyone else on their schedule; and Florida and Texas wins out. This is why I hate the BCS. It's not fair, and this is one time I'm siding with Orrin Hatch (R-UT) in his proposal that the BCS is not lawful breaking anti-competition laws (don't really know what that means but you're in law school Devin you could tell me if it is or not.) Last year I saw an interesting statistic that said 94% of everyone that voted wanted to see an 8 team playoff system. It would only take 3 weeks, you'd have all the excitement of upsets, close games, and true football in the chase for the national championship. Last year you could make the argument UT got screwed, USC got screwed, and Utah got screwed at a shot for the national title. If the US government decides to get involved and declare an 8 game playoff system for the national title, that would be the best thing they've done in the last decade.

Creighton, I think you just gave me an idea for my law review article: whether or not the current BCS system is violating anti-trust laws!! Thanks man!

I have not had that much time to look into this, obviously, but I would love to. And I agree with you 100% - an 8 team playoff would be AWESOME. It would be like March Madness is for NCAA basketball. You won't hear many coaches say that, but I think deep down they all know that the current system just doesn't work. Many underdogs from non-BCS schools have played really well in BCS bowl games (Boise and Utah immediately come to mind). Why do you think Urban Meyer left Utah for Florida? Because he knew he'd never get to the title game in a non-BCS conference.

I've gotta defend my Longhorns. The way their defense played on Saturday, it would have made little difference if Dez Bryant were on the field. They were flying all over the place. The victory margin may have been a little smaller, but UT still would have rolled. And Georgia has been a shell of its former self since losing Stafford and Moreno to the NFL. Their defense has also played horrible all year (except the LSU game). I'm know I'm biased, but I was much more impressed with Texas' performance on the road this weekend than I was with Florida's win over a very weak Georgia team at home. I think if the title game were this weekend (assuming a UT-Florida matchup), Texas would win.

I'm glad Oregon has played so well lately - that only makes Boise's win over them look better. But if TCU and Cincy win out, they will both leap from Boise in the end because their schedules are tougher. All the more reason for a playoff!

Man I can just see it on the edge of your seat to see number eight Boise about to upset number one Florida. Just like march madness. The bcs is just a way for the big schools to run the league. To make sure they have all the national spotlight. A 8 team tournement would be awesome cuz then standings really matter. You would want to be in the top eight do u could contend. You think about it how often do u really see a number one and number two contend for the tittle. We all know that if certain schools are in the top six even they will most likely play for the tittle. Now since it is still the bcs go Boise!!! I say this only cuz it gives Utah state money if they go. I look at every other sport in the country has playoffs on all levels so why is college football so special? Money money money, well it is time for this to stop. Hey look at it we are all in a recession so why should it be about spending so much money any more? It is time to let us get excited about something other than buying a mcdouble from the dollar menu.
